5 “perfect” meals from 5 different websites. Are they effective?

Perfection. I strive for it all the time but I often fall short of being perfect. Just ask The Boyf. The poor man has to put up with me thinking I know everything all the time. I am not a nutritionist, and he in fact has accredited qualifications in this area. Since I am not an expert, I thought I’d put my hand to researching The Perfect Meal. I have consulted many websites and I have pulled together a few ideas for you from various sources.

What is the perfect meal?

Lots of websites out there give you a ‘perfect day of eating’. I am usually annoyed by these articles as they often don’t go into portion sizes and the like. I have even written a scathing post about this called A Perfect Day of Eating? What Bollocks! I even contacted the author of the original article to tell him that I thought his plan was crap. He nicely replied to me, so I felt a bit bad for ranting.

Perfect meal #1

Thatsfit.com has written an article on this. They give a whole day of eating, so I will give you just their suggestion for lunch: “Build yourself a rainbow salad. Start with dark, leafy greens and pile them high with a mix of colourful veggies, protein, and good-for-you fats. Add 1/4 cup of avocado for healthy, monounsaturated fat, and ½ cup of protein, like tuna fish, grilled chicken, turkey, beans, or lentils.”

Alyce’s assessment of this meal: Blergh. I would need some bread to eat with this or I would feel unsatisfied and angry.

Perfect meal #2

Nick Tumminello is a famous bodybuilder and he says this is his perfect meal: “These main components: Lean protein (eggs, chicken, fish, bison, beef, low fat dairy, etc.), fibrous carbohydrate (fruits and vegetables), starchy carbohydrate (sweet potatoes, brown rice, oatmeal, etc.) and a healthy fat (monounsaturated, Polyunsaturated, Omega-3 fatty acids – avocado, nuts, olive oil, etc).”

Alyce’s assessment of this meal: Yep, I would eat this but WHERE are your portion sizes, Nick??Can I use half a cup of olive oil on my steamed potatoes? Is that OK?

Perfect meal #3

Muscleandfitness.com is another great site with lots of great pictures to make you hungry. Here is their idea of the ideal lunch: “The Perfect Lunch is 6-9 oz. extra-lean ground beef.2 cups pasta. 3⁄4 cup broccoli. 700 calories, 60 g protein, 83 g carbs, 13 g fat.”

Alyce’s assessment of this meal: Good lord, people!! 700 calories for one meal? Are you CRAZY? Thanks for giving me the correct portion sizes and nutritional information so that I can clearly see that this is FAR TOO MUCH food. I would be OK with about half of this meal.

Perfect meal #4

Nourishingmeals.com is a very different website and they also go delightfully specific when giving suggestions for the perfect meal. Here is what author Ali has suggested for lunch: “Wild Alaskan King Salmon (I buy it from a local fish market). Roasted Yams, and Apple Spiced Collard Greens (from our Cookbook). That’s it, no bread, no dessert, just this perfect meal.”

Alyce’s assessment of this meal: Roasted Yams and Apple Spiced Collard Greens should not be capitalised as they are not proper nouns. The author of this piece obviously thinks of food as more important than it is. However, I would eat this, so I give a ‘pass’.

Perfect meal #5

Paleohacks.com is a site where people share paleo recipes. What the hell is that, you might ask? Read about the paleo diet here. Both my darling parents are on this diet and they seem more vital and attractive than ever before (and they have always been vital and attractive). However – I think they’re nuts. If I couldn’t eat a giant squishy croissant I would go crazy.

Here is what one commenter on this website gave as a favourite paleo meal: “I love to make lamb shanks…sear the lamb shanks in a little butter, pour over some red wine and stock, add sundried tomatoes and olives, a few sprigs of whatever herbs you have, season with cinnamon, nutmeg, coriander, salt & peppers and let simmer for about 2 – 2 1/2 hours on low heat. tastes UH-MAZING. sometimes i have it with a side of sweet potato mash. NOM!”

Alyce’s assessment of this meal: Yep, you win buddy. I am not a fan of lamb but I love your enthusiasm. Happy paleo my good friend.
