Most people who want to write for a living want to start out swinging by making millions from writing their debut novel, but the reality is that, for most writers, that kind of success comes later, if at all. That doesn’t, however, mean that aspiring writers should give up their dreams of making money from their craft.
There are, after all, more opportunities than ever before to earn money as a writer and to earn a living with your writing. You probably know some of the common ones, which is why I’ve put together a list of some more unusual ways you can earn real money as a writer, at least until you get that book deal!
#1: Write and edit resumes
There are countless individuals who are looking to gain the competitive edge over other candidates to land their dream role, and they are more than willing to pay for the privilege. That’s good news for you as a writer, because you could quite easily if you have the knack for it, earn a decent living writing resumes for others. If you want to earn money as a writer, this is a great place to start.
#2: Write real estate descriptions
Another thing that people are more than happy to pay for is the ability to sell their properties faster and for a great price. Cue another opening in the market for you as a talented writer. If you know houses and you know how to make them sound more attractive, you could earn well offering your services to homeowners looking to sell their properties, simply by crafting better listings on their behalf.
#3: Try speech writing
In a similar vein, writing speeches for local business people, politicians or really anyone who may need to give a speech at some point in their life, could be a decent way to earn some extra cash doing what you love. You can earn money as a writer with speech writing if you set your mind to it and investigate all your contacts via networking.
#4: Biography writing services
You’d be surprised, especially in the internet age, just how many people require their own biography to put up on their website or include in their publications. Local bands, artists and craftspeople, business owners – they all need to promote themselves and having a good biography available for anyone to look up is a good first step on the way to doing that. You might even be able to get a gig writing their website copy too!
#5: Webcomics
Webcomics are really popular right now and if you take a look at one of the most popular ones – you will see that you don’t need to have any drawing skills at all to create one. If you’re creative and you want to find a unique way of making money with your creative writing, this could be an avenue that’s really worth exploring. Aim to earn money as a writer by exploring all your options, and aim to give anything a try: diversify!

Podcasts are also massively popular right now, and the great thing, for you, about podcasts, is that most of them require scripts. You could make money scripting casts for others, or you could even start your own. If the subject is interesting and the writing is good, there’s no reason why you couldn’t earn money with podcasts. Research online and contact a few teams in your town or city to begin with and offer your services. You might even demonstrate a few improvements you could aim to make on their existing content, in a constructive and positive way.
#7: Teach writing skills & share your craft
If you’re a good writer and you’ve had some success, especially if you have a degree in creative writing or similar, going down the teaching avenue is a possibility. Even if you don’t meet the requirements to teach at local schools or colleges, there is nothing stopping you from creating a video course and putting it up on Udemy, for example. If you have your own website or blog, you could even create a course and run it there, teaching others how to follow in your footsteps and start their own online writing project.

There is actually a surprisingly large market for greeting card writers. You see, there are few people who can really hit the nail on the head and create short, unique and interesting greetings, which means that, if you have a` particular knack for it, you could earn pretty well. In fact, you could earn hundreds of dollars for one short verse if you play your cards right!

Yes, writing eulogies might sound a little left-of-centre, but this is a valuable service that is in demand. If you can be sensitive, compassionate and are good with dealing with diverse people, then writing copy for eulogies could be an avenue to explore. This might not be as big a potential earner as the above, but if you’re looking to just earn a little extra while you work on your novel, or you’d like to supplement your income by flexing your writing muscles in a rather unique way, offering your services as a eulogy writer, perhaps advertising with your local funeral parlour, could be an interesting, if rather unusual way to do it.

Could you potentially assist your colleagues and friends with writing up their LinkedIn profiles? Do you have the flair for helping people put together copy for dating sites, or business intros on platforms like the popular Etsy? Often people have their minds set on other parts of their business and may need a helping hand with compiling fresh sounding, relevant copy. Spend time interviewing or getting to know your subjects and aim to capture them in an authentic way.
