Dreaming of your childhood home | Dreaming of a basement

Have you been dreaming of your childhood home? Or have you been dreaming of a basement? My dreamer today is Diane from Auburn in California, USA. Thanks for sending in your dream, Diane.

Diane describes it: Dreaming of your childhood home

My dreams are mostly in my childhood home. I make a change to a room and it catches on fire. The next night the fire’s in the basement and when I am carrying water to put the fire out I keep dropping the bucket of water. Then someone else is there putting it out.” Dreaming of your childhood home is a common dream.

What does it mean to dream of houses?

When we dream of houses, we are dreaming of the self. The different rooms can represent different parts of our body. Attic rooms can represent our higher selves, or our thoughts, while basements can represent our lower feelings and emotions.

Dreaming of a basement – what does this mean?

Dreaming of a basement can be about your primal ideas and notions, your “animal” self in many ways. These are unrecognised parts of us, that we all have. “Sometimes in our dreams the houses we see actually represent us and our spiritual self. Think about the position in the house as this could also be significant,” I said back in my post What does it mean to dream of empty rooms?

When we dream of our childhood home, this is often a return to our desires from childhood. You may want to go back to a time when you had little to worry about, when you were free and easy.

To dream of the childhood home means that you are thinking about, “security, basic needs, and values. You may be feeling at “home” or settled at your new job or environment,” according to my favourite dreams website. “Alternatively, the dream represents your basic needs and priorities.”

What does it mean to dream of fire?

Fire is a complicated symbol, as it can mean many different things, depending on the context. It can mean purification, destruction, renewal or even internal transformation.

“To dream that a house is on fire indicates that you need to undergo some transformation. If you have recurring dreams of your family house on fire, then it suggests that you are still not ready for the change or that you are fighting against the change.”

In my earlier post What does it mean to dream of fire? I said, “To dream that you are being burned by fire indicates that your temper is getting out of control. Some issue or situation is burning you up inside. To dream that a house is on fire indicates that you need to undergo some transformation.”

You have been fighting some change that you have been aware that you need to make, perhaps since childhood. I think that as this is “the basement” it is about some lower desire, some deeply hidden part of you. Our basement is normally where we store all our “crap”, all our junk, all the stuff that we really don’t need but think we do.

What does it mean to dream of water?

The water in your bucket symbolises your emotions. If you would like read more about water dreams, head to my post about What Does it Mean to Dream of Water?

I said, “Dreaming of my own emotions. These wells of water symbolise the well of emotions within us, and so the water is indicative of our inner states. Sometimes we cannot properly express ourselves in our waking lives, so we demonstrate our emotions to ourselves in our dreams subconsciously.”
