The 8 signs of being in love: How to know when you’re truly in love

Lucky you – are you thinking that maybe you’re in love? Love is the world’s greatest gift, and it is one of the deepest benefits of being human – having the capacity to love and be loved. There have been times in my life when I have felt so far away from any love. Life can feel empty and shallow. Without love in our lives, we struggle to do the simplest things. “Man is not an island”. This expression means that we need other humans’ love to make us grow and flourish. If you think you might be in love, here are some simple ways to tell.

  1. You admire your lover’s ethics

One of the things that humans have above animals is that we have a higher level of consciousness. We are able to connect with God and to plan for the future. Animals cannot really do this, except in the most basic level. That does not mean that we are superior to animals, it just means that it is our God-given gift to make sure we connect with our higher powers, whether you believe in a traditional God or not. Loving someone else is a way of loving yourself, and realising your true inner potential.

  1. You think about them a lot

One of the 8 signs of being in love is when you think about your lover at lot. You wonder what they are doing, wonder what they are thinking and you wonder what they are doing throughout their day. In general, human beings are selfish creatures – we have to be – for our own survival. But when you find true love you begin to put another person’s needs before your own.

  1. You cannot imagine life without them

There are some people that come into our lives that have more impact than others. When you are truly in love, it can almost feel like a sickness. You cannot imagine life without that person, and looking into your future, you want them there by your side. If you feel like this about a person, then this could be another sign that you are truly in love.

  1. You think of their needs before your own

According to Paul Hudson from Elite Dating, “The more egocentric you are, the more you will focus on you and you alone. The slightly less egocentric you become, the more you will begin to focus on other people.” I agree that this is a natural consequence of being truly in love.

“Most will start with those closest to them,” Hudson adds, “those who still have a relatively high level of relation to you, and continue to span out as their egocentric tendencies transform.”

  1. You miss them when you’re not near them

I truly do think that people are designed to be partnered with someone for life. However, not everyone gets to have that but I do not think that it’s impossible. When you are truly in love with someone, you may feel like you miss them when they are not physically around you. You may even love the way they smell, the twinkle in their eye or silly little things that they do. Other people can be true sources of delight!

  1. You feel physically connected to them

One of the most obvious ways to tell that you love someone is to feel attraction to them physically. I have read that on a deep esoteric level, physical attraction is the one thing that we have that is against our will. When we are drawn to a man or a woman physically, this is not a conscious decision – it requires no thought, no will power – it simply ‘is’.

Ananda, Clarity Magazine says this in a very interesting way. “We must be careful with whom we associate because we are continually exchanging magnetism with people through our thoughts, shaking hands, and through our eyes,” which many people may have experienced to be true. “We become like the people we mingle with, not through their conversation, but through the silent magnetic vibration that goes out of their bodies.”

  1. You share a common goal

One great thing about finding someone to love is that you can plan together, because you share common goals. Every couple’s common goals will be different – they may be spiritual, material, family-related or planning for the future. One of the signs that you are truly in love is when you share a common goal and can get excited about working towards it.

  1. You would die for them

Not to sound too dramatic, but one of the signs of being truly in love is feeling like you would give your life for the other person. “Love is life. And if you miss love, you miss life,” says Leo Buscaglia, otherwise known as Dr Love. He was an American author and motivational speaker, and a big advocate for true love.

When you really love someone you may feel like you would do anything for them, like their life is more valuable than your own. Without this common drive, the human race may not have gotten very far, as we wouldn’t have been working together.

True love is really a blessing. I hope that you find it and keep it. If you have, please let me know in the comments below.

Yep. Found my true love about a year and half ago. I met him online in Facebook. We never met up even once, before this April. Before we could plot a plan to meet up, he got involved in a near fatal car crash that left his semi paralysed on the left side of his body. I flew about 2000 n.miles to see him a week after her got involved in that tragedy. I had to put up with his tantrums, emotions and rants throughout his recovery process. He is still disabled till now and abuses me with words now and then. Why am I putting up with his behaviour, you may ask. Because I found true love but he didn’t.

      Hi R.S.,

What a sad story. Yes, I understand. Going through something like becoming disabled is a true test of character. Nigella Lawson’s first husband, John Diamond, died of cancer. Nigella spoke about how difficult that was for her and her children, and that dying of throat cancer made him difficult to be around.

If yours is a new relationship, don’t feel tied to him. If you allow the bad treatment to continue, you may become resentful.
