How to blog from your iPhone

I am an efficient person. Some days, I come home and tell The Boyf, “I was so effective today,” then I ask what’s for dinner and lose my iPhone/charger/favourite t-shirt and he puts my life back together for me.

We all struggle to make the best use of our time. Right now, I am waiting in line at the supermarket, hoping to purchase the ingredients I have chosen for our dinner tonight.

**Whoops! I just got hurried along because I wasn’t paying attention to the check out queue. I hate when people do what I just did. It irritates the hell outta me…

**Now I’m back home- it’s 1 hour later and I’m blasting out a few words while the meatloaf is in the oven and The Boyf sleeps on the couch, looking adorable, and drooling slightly.

So, what were we talking about?

Oh yes…being efficient.

“Efficiency is doing things right; effectiveness is doing the right things.”

Peter Drucker was an Austrian-born American management consultant, educator, and author, whose writings contributed to the philosophical and practical foundations of the modern business corporation. Born in 1909, he displayed the sort of “go get ’em” terminology we associate with millennial career gurus such as Tony Robbins or Donald Trump.

Interestingly, this turn-of-the-century philosopher predicted many modern business conditions. From Wikipedia: “privatisation and decentralisation; the rise of Japan to economic world power; the decisive importance of marketing; and the emergence of the information society with its necessity of lifelong learning”. Cool guy, yeh?

**Well, i may not be both efficient and effective, but I can write a blog post while standing in line at the supermarket- but oh no! I’m **distracted again. It’s hard to keep a coherent train of thought in this day and age – so many constant distractions!

In order to achieve at any one thing – we need time with it. That’s why I have no qualms about clocking off from my job at the designated, accepted time (whether I’ve been told it’s 4, 5, 6 or 7 PM) as this allows me to spend time with my family – a valuable KPI.

Equally, I have no problem switching my phone to silent when at my work desk, as I need solid blocks of uninterrupted time to achieve for my job, and do the copywriting I am paid (and love) to do.

**Sometimes we think we are being efficient when we “split” our time, but this may not be true. Right now I am ignoring The Boyf to get these words down. Is that ok? I don’t think so. I hate this little “magic box” of mine, as my my 85 year old relative, Great Uncle Mick likes to call it; sometimes it feels more like a tether than a device nurturing my freedom.

**Whew! It’s ok now, he’s fallen asleep so I can finish this blog post and my meatloaf (which I have been talking up, quite frankly, so I have some anxiety about it turning out alright) and then go “back” to my regular, Sunday afternoon.

Was it always this way?

I sometimes wonder what my grandmothers would think of my current lifestyle. I get this thought often enough, most notably when I am on the treadmill at my local gym, running very fast to go nowhere at all.

“What’s the bloody point?” I imagine them saying. “Shouldn’t you just go home and FOCUS on one thing?”

Well, geemamars. You might be right.

So – I don’t often written my blog posts like this- this is just how I live my life. Do you do the same? Did we always do it like this?

This has been the first blog post I have ever uploaded “on the run” and it may not even work. It my not have had any value at all.

I dislike having to live this way. Yet, I indulge my desires. Deep down, we all secretly love our iPhones because they make us feel important. Having constant demands on our time fills us with pride.

“You are important,” my phone says to me.

“Look at all these people/apps/emails/games/opportunities/updates that you have to do.”

So I sacrifice the love, time and energy I have for my loved ones, and I give it (again) to the greater unknown.

Is it worth it? Or should we out our phones down?

Despite my best intentions, I see a battle ahead.

    Alyce,

Wow – I thought of this a hundred times. Maybe there is an app for it.

    I don’t know.

But the best thing you can try is just pre-writing your posts in one sitting. Then they can drip out.

    Cute…..

      Hi Brian

Yes, the WordPress app itself is getting better, and I use Instagram photos as my header pics.

The tricky part was tapping away on this tiny keyboard. Being a full time copywriter I love to type with a big screen, clickey keyboard and decent mouse.

Thanks for your comment and all the best with your writing.
