Does Eating Too Much Chicken Make Your Boobs Grow? And What Of Man Boobs?

There is a theory you have probably heard that too much chicken makes your boobs grow. There has been some news recently that estrogen in chicken and beef may be contributing to hormone-dependent cancers. This is from a study in the US. The study was presented in early June at the American Society of Clinical Oncology annual meeting in Chicago. It showed that U.S. chicken and beef contain relatively high levels of estrogen.

Can you have too much estrogen in your system?

Estrogen dominance occurs when estrogen is found in excessive concentrations and compromises the delicate balance of other hormones. In women this can lead to hormonal problems, ovary troubles and tender breasts. The article does not go into symptoms for males.

According to the article, these are all estrogenic foods

  • Soy
  • Commercially raised meat
  • Conventional produce
  • Plastic wrapped and canned foods
  • Caffeine

So, as you can see from that list – estrogen is very difficult to avoid. Could too much chicken make your boobs grow? Let’s find out.

Does excessive estrogen consumption cause “Man Boobs”

That’s what we call them in Australia. Another affectionate term is “Moobs”. I don’t know anyone who has them, but I see my fair share on the beach and under too-thin shirts on public transport. There is a bit of a theory here in Australia that eating too much chicken causes man boobs. If you think that too much chicken makes your boobs grow, you might be right.

To quote a reputable source:

“…he informed me that he avoided eating commercially produced chicken because he had done some research, and found that chicken meat caused manboobs. “It’s the hormones see,” he reliably informed me. Now I can guarantee you that if you are an Australian, you have spoken to someone who believes commercially produced chickens in Australia contain growth hormones and that that is the reason why some girls are reaching puberty earlier or are the cause of manboobs or some such thing.”

Does too much chicken makes your boobs grow?

This awesome blog post is from a “research scientist who has worked in the fields of freshwater ecology, biological conservation, behavioural ecology, invasive species management and plant pathology” named Mike, but who does not want to reveal his last name. I should mention here that Mike does not agree. He points out that  in Australia, commercial chickens are no longer fed hormones. The quote is from his mechanic who is not a scientist, but his attitude seems to reflect an Old Wives’ Tale touted by many Aussies. But not just Australians think this way…

Soy makes your boobs grow too

Now I have not experienced this personally (thank god because I have already blogged about how my big boobs are not as fun as you think) but there have been reports in Hollywood of actresses eating soy products to gain weight. It seems that too much chicken makes your boobs grow in some cases.

A still of the Marilyn Monroe type character in The Help

Actress Jessica Chastain (who is vegan, incidentally) said that she ate lots and lots of soy ice cream to play Marilyn Monroe in the movie The Help.

She says, “I had to be soft and curvy, so I ate a lot of soy. Soy helps you become curvy because it has oestrogen in it. So what I would do—and this is really gross—is buy cartons of soy ice scream, microwave it and drink it. It was disgusting, but wait until you see my boobs in the movie.” If you want to know if too much chicken make your boobs grow, then it’s really still up in the air, but you should be safe.

I have not seen the movie, so I cannot vouch for her boobs.

I don’t mean to be picky, and while you have linked to my blogpost, I feel that perhaps you have been a little selective in quoting and have given the wrong impression that I agree with the notion that in Australia, commercial chickens are fed hormones. My post was addressing the use of non-experts on the internet for scientific advice and inparticular in the field of climate science. The part you have quoted relates to a discussion I had with my mechanic who had read on the interent that eating chicken causes manboobs. My anecdotal retelling of this was an analogy. So, from where you have cut off my quote, it goes on to say…

“Now I can guarantee you that if you are an Australian, you have spoken to someone who believes commercially produced chickens in Australia contain growth hormones and that that is the reason why some girls are reaching puberty earlier or are the cause of manboobs or some such thing. Now here’s the question, do I accept the word of my mechanic that chicken meat in Australia has growth hormones? He’s a great mechanic, an intelligent man, a good cook, and a lovely bloke in general. Well in short, no. Aside from the fact that the practice of introducing growth hormones to chickens was banned in Australia in the 1960′s, the fact is, my mechanic is not an expert, nor was the source of his information that he gleaned from the internet either.”

That is a fact. Commercially produced chickens in Australia do not contain added hormones and have not since the 1960’s. It is illegal for producers to add them to feed and the penalties for doing so are extremely severe. With selective breeding enabling a bird to go from hatching to the dinner plate in as little as 10 weeks, there is no need for hormones anyway. Included in the list of things I have done, you can also include poultry farmer, which I did until my mid 20’s before going to university to become a scientist. Cheers. Mike

Thanks so much for the clarification, Mike.

Yours was the only reference I could find to the Aussie “Old Wives’ Tale” that eating too much chicken gives someone boobs (man or otherwise).

I will make that clarification in the text of the article. Thanks so much for your comment and I will make sure I stop by your great blog again. Alyce

Sedentary lifestyle caused my moobs. Tofu is helping me get rid of them.

    🙂

I love tofu! I don’t find any side effects from it and its so much easier to store and cook than meat!

Thanks for your comment – I love to hear about others’ experiences with foods and particular products.

      All the best

This is bad news for men who may be unknowingly making their bodies more conducive to estrogen. This is what many people refer to as an aromatizing effect of food.

    1. July 29, 2013

I’m not sure of the science behind it – but as I mention in the article – there is anecdotal evidence here in Australia that this is so!
